What is revenue per employee in the selected service industries?
Workspace369 divides each industry’s annual revenue by its matching March employee count. These aggregate ratios are benchmarks for interpreting business models, not the median firm’s performance or an individual worker’s output.

Original Workspace369 calculation from Census inputs. Revenue is not profit or value added; pass-through receipts and staffing models affect comparisons.

Which source values reproduce the benchmark?
The numerator and denominator come from the same year, geography, industry and operation/tax-status row. The revenue input must be multiplied by one thousand before division.

Payroll is a separate companion measure, not a revenue substitute. No annual salary or per-hour productivity estimate is derived from these values.

How precise are the source estimates?
Census publishes coefficients of variation for the input estimates. They describe relative standard error, not a margin that can be directly attached to the calculated revenue-per-employee ratio.

These are source reliability metadata, not additional headline statistics. The covariance needed for a ratio confidence interval is not supplied here; no interval or significance-ranked league table is invented.
Primary sources: U.S. Census Bureau — September 3, 2026 · U.S. Census Bureau — checked September 13, 2026
Is March headcount equivalent to annual full-time staffing?
No. A point-in-time employee count differs from annual average full-time equivalents and can be affected by seasonality or staffing changes. Revenue covers a full year.
A business with major headcount changes should calculate its own annual-average staffing measure separately and label it differently.
Does a higher ratio mean a more profitable or productive business?
No. Revenue can include costs passed through to customers, and different industries use contractors, capital and employees differently. Profitability requires expense and margin information, not revenue alone.
Use revenue per employee as one diagnostic alongside your own service mix, margins, utilization and accounting definitions—not as a target every team should match.
How this report was built
Methodology and limitations
- We extracted national 2024 AIES00BASIC rows with TYPOP=00 and TAXSTAT=00 from the official public ZIP, using its supplied field dictionary. Selected service industries have no flagged input values or unresolved industry-footnote codes.
- Census reports revenue and payroll in USD thousands. Each ratio converts revenue to dollars and divides by the corresponding EMP_MAR12_NUM value. All formulas and input IDs are included in the ledger.
- This is a ratio of aggregate estimates, not an average of company ratios. The selected groups are not summed into an all-services benchmark, and no cross-year growth or inflation adjustment is calculated.
- The AIES uses a sampled employer-business frame and is subject to sampling and nonsampling error. Input CVs are retained as reliability metadata; no ratio uncertainty is computed without covariance information.
What these numbers cannot tell you
- Nonemployer businesses and freelance side gigs are outside this employer-industry comparison. The source population and March headcount definition must remain attached to citations.
- National industry aggregates conceal firm-size, geographic and service-mix differences. They are not individual employee productivity measures or recommended sales quotas.
- The selection omits industries with unresolved footnotes instead of silently discarding their qualification. This is a selected service-industry benchmark, not an exhaustive industry ranking.
